In this post I am analysing a poster from the movie 'Fury' with Brad Pitt in a main role.
The director and the writer of the film was David Ayer one of the most popular works that he has done before ‘Fury’ was the film ‘End of Watch’. And the main role-played Brad Pit, the actor who is the Golden Globe-winner, and the owner of the 92nd Academy Awards statuette. So, from that information we can understand that the film probably has good scenario, or the director (Davis Ayer) has offered, so this means that the film has a big budget. That might suggest us that in the movie might be either good effects or interesting locations and decorations.
There will probably be one main character in the movie. Poster suggests it to us. He might’ve lost some of his friends throughout the war/battle we can see it by the emotional state of the character on the poster, the face is full of sadness, tiredness, terror, fury towards Nazis. The character is probably an army officer, costumes suggest that. Due to dirt on his uniform we can get that he does most of the ‘dirty’ work. The uniform is dirty, ripped. However, he is wearing gloves, so that suggests us that character is either a pilot or just ranks position just above an ordinary army officer. Most of this is denotating level of the poster, what the main character is wearing, dirt. The only thing that I haven’t spoken about is the big, black figure in the end of the poster. We (as an audience) can’t clearly see what is that, however, from the uniform of the main character we can suggest that it might be a part of a tank and the army officer or a pilot is resting on it after a long battle. On the suggested part of the tank we can also see the name of the movie but about it.
The connotative level of this poster is that the darker colours are used, it suggests us that the tone of the film will be dark, dramatic, have an emotional impact on the audience. We can see that the adhering stereotypes have been used well in this poster. It shows us an army officer, who is a man, not woman, because we stereotypically think that only men go and fight the war, not women. However, there is not only just a man, the poster contains strong, simplistic in a way and there is only one subverting stereotype that shows us very thoughtful and responsible man, because usually we get men who are irresponsible and don’t really care about what they are about to do.
The plot. The film will probably about the war and the anger that most all the soldiers felt towards the Nazis closer to the end of the war. We can make this suggestion from the tagline ‘ War never ends quietly’ , so that brings us to the suggestion that the film will be about that sort of time period that is closer to the end of the war, and also film will be about the anger and fury that everybody have felt towards the end of the war. The name ‘Fury’ gives an audience idea of that the film might be about WW2 not the WW1 because closer to the end of the WW2 more people were furious, because it’s been already second time when the Germany decided to take over all the World with the difference in between less than a century.
The main character is probably leaning on the part to the tank that is standing on the battlefield after the battle has finished. This suggests us the colour of the sky, the sky is very dark, intensive. It makes audience to feel the tension. We can also suggest that it is the end of the battle not the begging by the dirt on the uniform of the character. Normally in pretty much all the war films directors try to make the sky darker during the battle and lighter either towards the end of the battle or just after the battle just finished. This is used to make audience scared for the characters who they support throughout the film.
