Research into areas of film making. Distribution and Exhibition.

Distribution and exhibition of the film -- are how the film has been released and where it's been released. It is also about how much money did it earn ( eg box-office or gross). It is also all but the ways in which the film is organized both internationally and nationally.

Usually, distribution involves five stages:

  1.  the film has been released to the cinema
  2. DVD & Blu-Ray ( eg PlayStation, iTunes..)  either rents or buys the film.
  3. after that film starts to be streamed ( it usually happens through applications such as amazon prime, Netflix, etc.)
  4. After that, the film is now uploaded on the network (e.g Sky TV)
  5. And in the end, the film is finally on the TV.

Without exhibition and distribution, the film can not simply be seen, which means that all the money and the time has been wasted on nothing. So, I certainly believe that these two parts of film production are as important as the rest of it. If your film won't be distributed and exhibited no one will see it, so you will not get a profit from it.

As an example of good distribution and exhibition of the film, I will be using "Suicide squad".

This film was distributed in 2016 by Warner Bros studios and directed and written by David Ayer.

Top-billed cast was: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Ike Barinholtz, Jaime FitzSimons.

  • it was exhibited in cinemas in 62 countries worldwide. That included Russia, Ukraine, United Kingdom, France and others.
  • it was released on Blu-ray and Digital HD and all others only in November and December 2016

  • as well as film company introduced behind the scenes

  • bloopers

And all of these things are also part of marketing. However, many companies, especially bigger ones (like Warner Bros) tend to face piracy. Due to piracy filming companies can lose up to billions of dollars, because the audience goes to watch something for free rather than something that you have to pay for.
However, piracy is a still way of distribution, just an illegal way of doing so.

Research into areas of film making. Marketing.

Marketing -- different ways in which the film was promoted and sold to the audience.

Marketing can be broken up into two main areas, which are:

  1. Traditional marketing -- print, billboards, and anything that does not stay online.
  2. digital marketing  -- all to do with the internet. Trailers, interviews.

Marketing plays an important role in making the audience want to buy the product (film). If there is no marketing, then the film can't earn much money from the film.

If you are involved in the marketing side of the film, you can make a lot of different, interesting jobs, such as:

  • film marketing executive
  • marketing production assistant
  • advertising manager
  •  digital artist (draw posters)
And many more different jobs, that involve can be done only during the marketing of the film.

All examples below are from the film  'Me before you' 2016.

Director: Thea Sharrock
Top Billed cast: Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Janet McTeer, and Eileen Dunwoodie.
Studio: Warner Bros Studio
  •  Me Before You  had two official trailers and two posters
  • It was not marketed much, mainly due to the fact that it was based upon a book by Jojo Moyes in 2012.

Here is an example of both trailers for these films:

The first one was slightly shorter than the second one, it just highlighted the main suspects of the film, showing off the plot.

The second trailer was released after 2 months after the release of the first one. This helped to raise the hype around the film, more people were now waiting for the release of the film and the release of the rest of the trailers.
The second trailer, however, always shows more stuff, opens up more of the plot. After the second trailer for any film comes out almost always audience can guess what is the film going to be about, or at least it can now know who are the main characters and if there are any, who are the protagonists and villains.

As well as making trailers and making posters, some of the big filming companies and/or franchises are merchandising. For example, you can find a lot of toys, clothes, books, comic books, technology with 'Avengers' movie or with any other big film or a popular franchise. Unfortunately, Mr before you was not as successful to make different things with the theme of the film. "Me before you" film only had two trailers and one or two posters. It is also due to the fact that this film was based on the. book, so it was in a was marketed by the book.

Another very common marketing technique nowadays is to make a behind scenes videos, do some people would see how the film was shot and all inside outs.

It is also a very good tool to use because before watching a film audience can see how the film was shot.
Many big films, also, tend to make interviews with the main cast, so the audience could know even more about the film from their favorite actors. It also brings some hype around the film and increases the amount of audience the would like to go to the cinema and watch the film.

Research into areas of film making. Production.

Production can be broken up into three ways in which film is produced.

  • The first one  -- pre-production, this stage consists of planning, scriptwriting.
  • The second is the production. A time when the film been shot
  • Third and the last is post-production. It is mainly a time for editing.

Production is one of the most important areas of film making. It is all because it is a time when the film is actually made. So, the product is being as a part of this film making area.

When you are involved in production you can do many things, such as (in no particular order) :
  1. editing
  2. directing
  3. scriptwriting
  4. costume designer
  5. sound specialist
  6. lighting director
  7. location manager
  8. hair and makeup specialist
All examples below are from the film ' Titanic ' 1997.

Director and writer: James Cameron
Top-billed cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates.
Studio: 20th Century Fox

One of the examples of pre-production:

Before filming a crew visited the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean twelve times in 1995.

Titanic was filmed in five places, this included: Dartmouth, Mexico, Fox Baja Studious in Rosarito (Mexico), and Nova Scotia.

It took about four and a half months to fully edit Titanic, it was edited by James Cameron, Richard A. Harris, Conrad Buff IV.

as an example of production, I used behind the scenes from YouTube.
