Distribution and exhibition of the film -- are how the film has been released and where it's been released. It is also about how much money did it earn ( eg box-office or gross). It is also all but the ways in which the film is organized both internationally and nationally.
Usually, distribution involves five stages:
- the film has been released to the cinema
- DVD & Blu-Ray ( eg PlayStation, iTunes..) either rents or buys the film.
- after that film starts to be streamed ( it usually happens through applications such as amazon prime, Netflix, etc.)
- After that, the film is now uploaded on the network (e.g Sky TV)
- And in the end, the film is finally on the TV.
Without exhibition and distribution, the film can not simply be seen, which means that all the money and the time has been wasted on nothing. So, I certainly believe that these two parts of film production are as important as the rest of it. If your film won't be distributed and exhibited no one will see it, so you will not get a profit from it.
As an example of good distribution and exhibition of the film, I will be using "Suicide squad".
This film was distributed in 2016 by Warner Bros studios and directed and written by David Ayer.
Top-billed cast was: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Ike Barinholtz, Jaime FitzSimons.
- it was exhibited in cinemas in 62 countries worldwide. That included Russia, Ukraine, United Kingdom, France and others.
- it was released on Blu-ray and Digital HD and all others only in November and December 2016
- as well as film company introduced behind the scenes
- bloopers
And all of these things are also part of marketing. However, many companies, especially bigger ones (like Warner Bros) tend to face piracy. Due to piracy filming companies can lose up to billions of dollars, because the audience goes to watch something for free rather than something that you have to pay for.
However, piracy is a still way of distribution, just an illegal way of doing so.
