Marketing -- different ways in which the film was promoted and sold to the audience.
Marketing can be broken up into two main areas, which are:
- Traditional marketing -- print, billboards, and anything that does not stay online.
- digital marketing -- all to do with the internet. Trailers, interviews.
Marketing plays an important role in making the audience want to buy the product (film). If there is no marketing, then the film can't earn much money from the film.
If you are involved in the marketing side of the film, you can make a lot of different, interesting jobs, such as:
- film marketing executive
- marketing production assistant
- advertising manager
- digital artist (draw posters)
And many more different jobs, that involve can be done only during the marketing of the film.
All examples below are from the film 'Me before you' 2016.
Director: Thea Sharrock
Top Billed cast: Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Janet McTeer, and Eileen Dunwoodie.
Studio: Warner Bros Studio
- Me Before You had two official trailers and two posters
- It was not marketed much, mainly due to the fact that it was based upon a book by Jojo Moyes in 2012.
Here is an example of both trailers for these films:
The first one was slightly shorter than the second one, it just highlighted the main suspects of the film, showing off the plot.
The second trailer, however, always shows more stuff, opens up more of the plot. After the second trailer for any film comes out almost always audience can guess what is the film going to be about, or at least it can now know who are the main characters and if there are any, who are the protagonists and villains.
Another very common marketing technique nowadays is to make a behind scenes videos, do some people would see how the film was shot and all inside outs.
It is also a very good tool to use because before watching a film audience can see how the film was shot.
Many big films, also, tend to make interviews with the main cast, so the audience could know even more about the film from their favorite actors. It also brings some hype around the film and increases the amount of audience the would like to go to the cinema and watch the film.
